A Long Time Ago
As he slouched over the counter
His demeanor betrayed him
For he just looked as I did
When he snatched her from me
A long time ago.
A long time ago it seems
Only a few days gone
Six months and a week
To be precise
Still, a long time ago
I died then
When she ditched me
After he tantalized her
With flashy digital attention
Dulling my analogue affection
Of pure old fashioned down to earth adoration
A long time ago it seems
Only a few weeks gone
Six months and a week
To be precise
A long time ago
But I rose again
With scars on my wounded heart
Dry eyes that could cry no more
Dusted myself and got up again
Washed my face and learnt to smile
And try to live and love again
I joined him at the counter
His tears, his heartache told it all
He was me all over again
Perfectly reflecting my wounded soul
For she had been snatched again
From his calculating digital fingers
A few days ago
A long time ago it seemed to him,
Only a few days gone
Three months and a week
To be precise
A long time ago.
I understood his pain
As we shared that drink
Wondering what she’d gain
Ripping hearts asunder
Creating heartaches with a Midas touch
We sipped our whisky slowly
Drowning our tortured souls
A couple of disabled veterans
With broken hearts and spirits
In a battle of shattered love
A long time ago it seemed
Only a few days gone
Three months and a week
To be precise
A long time ago
As we partook the solemn communion
Silently comforting our beaten selves
He walked in and sat at the counter
His demeanor saying it all
For he just looked like us
When he snatched her from him
A long time ago
A long time ago it seems
Only a few hours gone
Perhaps a day or two
To be precise
A long time ago…
