KIKOTO’S MOUTH

By Evelyn Ongogo Okoth

Kikoto has a mouth
His mouth is just like any other mouth
But his mouth is dangerous!
It is venomous!
The village calls him the Mouthy Gander
It mouths more than other mouths mouth
Kikoto’s mouth can really mouth
He mouths at sunrise
Mouths at noon
And mouths at sunset
Kikoto mouths in all seasons
He mouths those with mouths
And mouths even those without mouths
He mouths those he loves
And mouths those he unloves!
Kikito’s mouth is such a long mouth
He mouths those he sees
And mouths those unseen
He mouths those with ears
But mouths more those without ears
His mouthing mouth will not be quiet
His mouth does not fail him
He will mouth you
Whether or not you mouthed him back
Or mouthed with him
Kitoto eats by mouthing
And lives by mouthing
Kikoto’s mouth lights fire
Fire that burns houses of those without mouths
His mouth brings down a whole tower
Then he coils himself in bed unmouthing
When Kikoto was taken to court
He mouthed the judge when he left
When he was taken to church
He mouthed his pastor on his departure
When the village called him
He mouthed his father
Then mouthed his mother
Today the village has caught Kikoto mouthing
And tied his mouthing mouth
They will cut his mouth and burn it tonight
And let the next sun that rises find him mouthless
Kitoto is now de-mouthed.
He will not mouth others again!
