THE 1852 ORDINANCE

By Aslam Bamba, Tamale, Ghana

1852, the year of Mr and Mrs Vinall

When the ordinance was prepared and passed

Their bags housed it & they chose front

Forward march to our huts

The sun the air & the whole cosmos

Had a meeting at the backyard

Never to welcome the Vinall

How so weather turned his back against its sons

When they sought for roof in another’s hut

With their toffee of missions

Shared among instructors they groomed

So they carry on instructing & directing the colony

Our weather frowned upon Mrs

So the train of chase came she joined the race

In the heart of days

The weather had a pick on him

He begged to stay

But the weather needed him no more

His limbs went cold & strength casted him adrift

There he lay paralyzed

On a ferry back home

To soothe his wounds with herbs

We never saw him

Neither did we bid him farewell
