VANITY
But ALL for VANITY!

VANITY

By Evelyn Ongogo

So baffling that people toil and strain
To make mansions of life
Mansions, where they stand
To look upon other souls
With spite and despise
All for VANITY!

Kings and queens
Princes and princesses are made
We look to them with such awe
And admiration,
Only to wither off and fall some day
Like a leaf from a tree
Just as a poor man does!
ALL for VANITY!

Life makes us strong
Life makes us weak
Life sends us storms that toss us afar
Then by it’s waves we are drawn aback
ALL for VANITY!

Life makes us cry
Then it wipes our tears and we laugh
And sometimes quiet, life makes us be
Life plays with our emotions in its palms
Like some dice or pieces on a chessboard
And we have to obey
But ALL for VANITY!

We build and break
We break and mend
We mend and forget
Then start all over again
ALL for VANITY!

We do things that rob us of our sleep
And doze a day long
Cursing the wind that took it away
ALL for VANITY!

We lie and hurt others to gain fame
And stand on high pedestals
Looking down upon them
ALL for VANITY!

We compete for sin
And break our sinless souls
Then call the name of the gods in vein
For we are full of self guilt
For the sin that never was
ALL FOR VANITY

We build a house that suits our ability
Then we see a neighbour’s
And take huge loans that burden us
To outshine others and feel kingly
ALL for VANITY!

VANITY controls us like robots

How many hearts have we broken?
How many lies have we made?
How much money have we made
And how much haven’t we made?

How far have we gone?
And how far haven’t we?
How much pain have we tasted
And much haven’t we?

How much happiness have we achieved
And how much haven’t we?
How much lot have we lost
And how much have we gained?

You count blessings by the press of a finger
And count your loss by linking an eye?
You count what your eyes can see
And not what your heart can feel
You count what made you happy
And not that which did not
Yet it made you grow
For ALL but VANITY?

We go round and round the earth endlessly
Looking for what does not satisfy us
We seduce and un-seduce
We love and un-love
We hate and un-hate
We forgive and un-forgive
Looking for the right place for our hearts to be
ALL for VANITY!

Men marry women
As women marry men
Then we condemn the men that marry men
And women that marry women
We are the highest judges
For the thief on the cross
Yet ALL is VANITY!

We eat expensive meals
Drive huge machines of fate
Look at others through a mirror
Then judge, surmount and price the
The difference as we build structures
That tumble down and rot
ALL for VANITY

Then we pray aloud
Sing aloud, shout!
Dance!
Curse and condemn
As if tomorrow is solely ours
And when tomorrow comes…
We lay in state…as we live the race for the rest to run, as other mouths speak for us.

VANITY upon VANITY!
VANITY OF ALL VANITIES …..
Is this life we bear!
