YES, I’M FINE

By Evelyne Ongogo

Don’t be mad at me
Because I am fine
I am fine, true
I am

He opened the pages of my life
Looked through
Picked a fair splint, kindly
And picked out a speck from my eye
So I would be fine
And Yes, I’m fine

He then tilted my head
And let it lay on his arms
My jaw-line tormented him
And he kissed a point just below it
I am fine!

He opened that page of my life
Looked through
And saw that nagging scar,
And oiled it
Never have I scratched again
Because I am fine

He looked through the pages of my life
Plucked a flower, that beautiful rose
And pressed it right in my palm
Drove it to my nose,
And asked me to smell and smile
And I smiled
Because I am fine
Really I am

He saw my teardrop fall
Before it reached that corner
Where my lips close
He licked all the saltiness
And promised that I would be fine
And yes, I am fine

His hands were better
His fingers were even better
To write over my heart
And paint images of love and hope
To date I haven’t stopped to read

He looked through my life
And saw a decadely space that lay vacant
That space, sure,
And asked how long I lived empty
And promised to fill it
Just one of his words sown within
Made me suddenly whole
And I am sure I’m fine

I’m fine.
